Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson Will Open Clubs for Impacted Families

TUCSON, Ariz. (March 20, 2020) – In response to local school district closures, Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson (BGCT) will be opening its Frank & Edith Morton Clubhouse at 3155 East Grant Road on Monday, March 23rd from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. to strictly provide emergency childcare to 60 children, ages 5-12, of essential/critical service community workers during the closure. In partnership with TUSD Meal Services, breakfast and lunch will be served daily. We will also be launching BGCT Clubhouse on the Go virtual program connections via social media to connect and engage with existing Club Members and Families for the duration of the closures.

Safety is the number one priority of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tucson, and we are doing everything possible to keep children, our staff, and volunteers protected from the COVID-19 virus. We continue to monitor all news from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Arizona Department of Health Services for updated guidance. We are advising all staff, families, and youth members to take precautions as recommended by the CDC, and providing additional resources like handwashing guides, and information about how to talk to young people about the spread of COVID-19. Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson will follow state and federal guidelines for sanitizing and disinfecting spaces during transitions of groups; hand washing protocols; and will ensure that groups are kept to ten or less.

BGCT Clubhouse on the Go virtual programming and social interaction opportunities will launch the week of March 23rd and be made available to the community through our Clubhouse Facebook pages and other social media. Families will sign up to participate by phone or computer in staff led Power Hour learning sessions, book clubs, art activities, and more. All of the connections will be designed with the goal of keeping youth engaged with Club staff and their peers. As participation in these virtual activities gain traction, Club kits will be made available via a drive-thru that will include supplies, snacks and books.

This is an uncertain and potentially difficult time for all and we anticipate that many of our youth are experiencing anxiety and the need for connection at this time. As an organization dedicated to youth development, it is our priority to address these issues.

If community members have additional questions, please contact Karin Malbrough, [email protected]. We will continue to update you as we know more.
